H. Murray Sawyer, Jr. Lawyer & Financial Advisor

Mr. Sawyer is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Westover. He is responsible for Westover’s investment strategy and process. He has extensive experience in fundamental equity research, asset allocation, tax research and investment management. He has written extensively on the investment world and its environment, and many of his thoughts are collected here under the tab “Our Thinking.”

He has received multiple awards for his investment acumen. For 2010 and 2011, Murray was identified as a Five Star Wealth Manager, as noted in Delaware Today. This is an award accorded to less than 6 percent of the wealth managers in the Delaware area. In 2011, of the approximate 137 wealth managers who were so recognized, he was one of the three who are investment advisors, as compared to 68 who were stock brokers and 66 who were financial planners. What’s the difference? Only investment advisors have a fiduciary duty to put their clients’ interests first, to act in their clients’ best interests at all times. He has also been previously recognized as one of the nation’s Top 250 Wealth Advisors by Worth Magazine.

He began managing his law firm’s pension and profit-sharing investment accounts in the early 1980s and continued to do so for many years thereafter. He founded Westover Capital Advisors, LLC in November, 1999. He is a member of the Investment Advisors Association.

Murray began his professional career as an attorney in 1971. In 1978 he founded a law firm which ultimately was recognized in the American Bar Association Journal as one of the best small firms in the country. For many years, until he retired from the practice of law, he had been recognized as an “AV-rated” attorney, which is the highest attorney peer-review rating possible, and which assesses an attorney’s competence and ethics.

He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina, along with a law degree from Vanderbilt University. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of University of North Carolina Friends of the Libraries, as well as a former president of the Wilmington Delaware Rotary Club. He was a former New Castle County Councilman. Over the years he has served on multiple charitable and educational boards in his Wilmington, Delaware community. He is married and has three children and five grandchildren.
