H. Murray Sawyer, Jr

Murray began his professional career as an attorney in 1971. In 1978 he founded a law firm which ultimately was recognized in the American Bar Association Journal as one of the best small firms in the country. He is a Martindale-Hubbell “AV-rated” attorney, which is the highest peer-review rating possible, and which assesses an attorney’s competence and ethics.

He began managing his law firm’s pension and profit-sharing monies in the early 1980’s and continued to do so for many years thereafter. Murray’s legal practice focused on estate planning matters in the ‘90’s. As part of his legal review, he would examine and analyze investment and retirement holdings of his clients. After receiving encouragement from both clients and professionals in the investment business, he took and passed his NASD Series 65 exam in the fall of 1999. This allows one to provide investment advice to the general public. His first client joined Westover Capital Advisors the following year. She remains a client.

In 2004, Murray turned his primary focus from the practice of law to the investment advisory business. Thus, today while he still holds his law license, he spends the vast majority of his time sweating the investment details for each and every Westover client. He is the Chief Investment Officer of Westover.

Murray has been recognized by Worth magazine as one of the Top 250 Wealth Advisors in the country. He is a member of the Investment Advisors Association.

He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, along with a law degree from Vanderbilt University. He is a member and past president of the Wilmington Rotary Club, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) Libraries. He was a New Castle County Councilman in the early ‘80’s. Over the years he has served on multiple charitable and educational boards in his Wilmington, Delaware community.
